Trophy-less four years...what needs to be done at The Emirates?

By Jamie Wright

I doubt that many Arsenal fans would have thought that watching Patrick Vieira lifting the FA Cup in 2005 would be the last time they witnessed their captain lifting a trophy. A barren four years later there are questions being put forward to the board and management about what direction the club is going in to bring the glory days back to the Gooners.

Since taking the helm, Arsene Wenger’s transfer policy has been to sign un-nurtured talent and develop them to suit his own style of attractive football. Time and time again, Wenger has proved he canun-earth talent in the shape of Nicolas Anelka, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira (to name a few) and develop them into household names.

However, during the last four years, Arsenal have replaced some of their experienced players with youngsters who haven’t quite been able to deliver the performances expected at a ‘big four club’.

Departing players such as Henry, Vieira and Gilberto Silva have never been replaced since leaving, so that, according to Wenger, the younger players can develop into their positions. As an Arsenal follower I feel the only young player to be extremely successful in this regard is Cesc Fabregas.

Vieira’s transfer to Juventus paved the way for Fabregas to make the position his own and he has arguably developed into one of the top three central midfielders in the world. Mathieu Flamini also became an integral part of the Arsenal first team but with AC Milan calling, he decided to jump ship and has been a major loss to Arsenal’s engine room.

In comparison with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, Arsenal’s central midfield really does lack the experience needed to challenge for honours. Alex Song, Denilson and Samir Nasri will be great players but for instant success they are not the answer compared with Gerrard, Alonso, Lampard, Essien, Carrick and Scholes.

Maybe it is time for Arsene to dig deep into the transfer kitty during the summer? The signing of Andrey Arshavin went against Wenger’s typical transfer policy and his immediate success of 6 goals in 12starts may well force Wenger to delve into the market for a few more experienced players.

I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that if a bit of experience was added to the youthful squad they already possess, Arsenal could be on the brink of brilliance once again. However, given Wenger's history, don't be too quick to use your next football bet backing such a situation to occur.

Why should he 'dig deep'? I too am an avid Arsenal fan and am getting more and more wound up, not by us failing to win anything but the people who question the management, the team and ethics of Arsenal Football Club.

Let's get some facts straight. Last season we came third. We started the season unbelievably with pretty much the same team as we are fielding at present. We received a hideous injury to Eduardo and our captain went crazy. Yes maybe a few experienced heads would have changed events, however, these were exceptional circumstances.

This year in what can be considered a 'bad' season we have reached a Carling Cup QF an FA Cup SF, a Champions League SF and easily come 4th in the league. All this without Arshavin for the majority, with long term injuries to Rosicky (first team player)and Eduardo (first team player)and countless other injuries to key players and more importantly at key times.

Against Chelsea on Sunday we didn't field our first choice GK, we didn't field our most experienced and best CB and we didn't field our first or even second choice LB. Can anyone else reasonably argue that any other top four team could have done much better than we did? If Utd were missing Van Der Sar, Rio and Vidic, Liverpool without Reina, Carragher and Arbeloa and Chelsea without Terry, Cole and Cech all for FA cup and Champions league semi finals and the last games of the season is anyone honestly telling me that teams would not score past them? For the first 10 minutes in the champions league semi final we dominated, Utd scored after a freak slip that could happen to any footballer at any time and effectively ended the game. On Sunday we dominated for pretty much the whole first half, were unlucky not to score and conceeded due to our weakened defence.

Maybe fans should ease up on 'the kids' stop adding pressure to a young talented side and stop trying to say how the best manager in Arsenal's history and one of the top managers in the league should manage his side.

Every club needs to strengthen and learn from mistakes at the end of a season, Arsenal are no different. Show your support.

In Arsene we trust!

Hi Jamie

Interesting article, I think MOTD covered the problem with Arsenal at the moment, itself it is the midfield.

Time and time again the highlight show pundits compared the workmanlike performance of Manchester United's midfield to that of Arsenal's and the main difference was when the teams's lost the ball.

When Manchester United lose the ball all the midfield players and even the attacking players track back and put pressure on the ball.

Whereas the Arsenal kids with their attacking prowess make no attempt to track back leaving the back four dangerously exposed to sides like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool that possess players with excellent passing abilities capable of scything through any defence.

Arsenal do not neccessarily need to spend big to succeed they just need a change in ethos and stability if the team stays the same and a team defence mentality to match the team offence mentality is garnered then success is not far away.

The foundations have been laid now is the time to stabilise and develop them.

Guys, thanks for the comments!

I agree whole-heartedly with Alex (Blogger) - the "buy new players" argument is always thrown into the mix without proper consideration of the problem.

If Arsene Wenger introduced a couple of experienced heads to the equation and reminded the team of their defensive duties (as pointed out by Kristian) then there is no reason why this Arsenal side cannot reproduce what they did last season, and perhaps go further.

Thanks for the comments, some honest replies.

In response to Alex (Blogger) Arsenal have been unlucky with injuries that in-turn has hampered their results, most notably for me Rosicky and Fabregas. These are two key creative players missing but looking for cover, their squad leaves a-lot to be desired. Manchester United have been without Hargreaves for the majority of the season but with the likes of Anderson, Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher and Giggs bidding for a place in centre midfield his absence has gone un-noticed!

Usmanov was quoted this week stating the 4-1 loss to Chelsea was similar to watching “men vs boys” and casting an eye over to the Man U bench the week before there was over “£100million” of talent ready for any situation!

As I mentioned before, the signing of Arshavin went against Wenger’s usual policy, and his instant success and seamless blend into the squad has been a breath of fresh air. I’m hoping two more players of similar experience and calibre are brought in this summer and mixed with the potential of Arsenals squad they will close the gap on the top of the table come May 2010.
