Standing on the edge

I haven't felt much like blogging this week, but as it is now the eve of my descent into working life I thought it would be appropriate to post. Neither the lottery win nor the bank robbery happened this week, and I will be starting at British Airways tomorrow. I'm telling myself now that I must use my spare time to make as much extra money as possible, hopefully from continuing to build my poker bankroll. I got it into three figures this week, which isn't bad for playing limits of 0.01/0.02. As you'd expect, the play at that level is pretty damn awful. Yeah your AA loses to J8 here and there, but on the whole it's hugely profitable if you consider the percentage ROI.

Anyhow, I was expecting this to be a philosophical entry. I haven't thought of the meaningful crux yet, so it will have to wait.

I see that John the Gambler had a very bad day on Betfair yesterday and is taking a break. I'm still on my break from trading after my disaster a short while ago, and my renewed concentration in poker is going extremely well. So John, I advise taking the time off, I'm actually enjoying it!

I'm sorry folks but I can't find the inspiration to write about anything philosophical. However, I have had a couple of ideas recently and would like to write about them on here at some point. One of them is about the element of luck involved in becoming truly successful, and the other is about the concept of going beserk in your twenties and trying to earn a whole load of money to fall back on when you're older (but not that much older). I'm sure you're all riveted.

Short update

The Imperial War Museum was very interesting, as predicted.

Today is going to be boring. I have to go and get a weekly travelcard in a minute to sort me out for work next week (aaaargh!)

Tonight is my last Thursday Night Drinks as a bum. We'll be doing another accumulator on the darts, so it will be nice to sign out as a mug. (As you've probably noticed, 'mug' is word of the week)

Laying England for a Living: I meant to do a quick post on this yesterday before the football but I forgot. Ok, so I would have lost 1/4 of a point laying England in the Third Test against New Zealand. However, you could have made that back laying them in the footy last night. I'd better set out a staking plan for this exercise just to make things consistent:- from now on, I will lay England so the max I can lose is one 'point' (just to reiterate, this is a paper trial).

6 days left

So after deciding to make this week as interesting as possible, yesterday was pretty uneventful during the day. Played poker for most of it, but had to stop midway through the afternoon because I had a couple of nasty river cards and was starting to tilt. Can't complain though, apart from that the cards have been falling pretty nicely lately. In the evening I went out for my final Monday Night Drinks as an unemployed mug. Played some darts, drank pretty heavily, and had some pretty funny conversations. My favourite was probably when I was venting my frustration at starting work next week and wishing that I was still 'free' and had no plans. We ended up concluding that I was even more of a mug for working. For those of you who read this blog before it moved here, you will remember me writing some pretty depressed entries on how I wished I could just get a job, any job. Well now I have one and I'm still complaining! I guess I'll always be complaining about something. I'll put that down to my constant struggle to achieve perfection, or some BS like that :-)

Tomorrow I'm off to the Imperial War Museum with my sister, and I'm pretty excited. I went there a couple of times with my family when I was a little boy and I rememeber finding it fascinating back then, so hopefully tomorrow will live up to expectations. I can act like a true boff and go round reading every single plaque and information board. There aren't many things in life that I find truly interesting, but war has always been one. If I hadn't broken my hand in the summer of '04, I would probably have been in the army right now. Anyhow, I digress...

I wanted to ask you guys what you most enjoy reading on here, so I can write more of it. What do you prefer (or hate most).... the stuff about my life in general, my gambling stories, random musings...? At the moment gambling is most of my life anyway, so those elements are all intertwined. Anyway, let me know. If there's anyone out there who enjoys gambling, I could write some stuff from time to time on some basic gambling concepts / philosophies. I know there are a few of you who are seasoned pros and will know that stuff inside out, but maybe some others would be interested. Would people find it interesting if I posted up some of my biggest poker hands of the day? Or not? Maybe I should shut up, this is getting long.

Final thing. There's a song that's doing the rounds on the radio at the moment and it's pretty catchy. Normally this music isn't my cup of tea, but for some reason I really like this track; 'Come on Girl' by Taio Cruz... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JKEXSuLW_E

Oh, and thanks to those who are leaving comments, it's nice to know there are people reading this. And don't worry, I haven't done any begging (yet)...

Random late night update

Well Grand Slam Sunday turned out to be utterly dreadful for the Gunners. Five games ago they were five points clear at the top. But they've only taken 4 points since then, which is relegation form. Thank God they've already surpassed the 40-point barrier for survival in the Premiership.

I quickly want to mention the commenting feature on this blog. I'm aware that for some stupid reason you had to have a Google ID in order to comment, but I think that has been sorted now. So, um, yeah, comment (please!)

A week from now I'm sure I'll be pretty nervous/annoyed/down about that fact that I'll be starting work on Monday morning. I have seven days of freedom left, in which I have time to make something happen - a lottery win maybe, or maybe I can mastermind an incredible robbery. I was thinking earlier about a conversation from last night, where someone had read that 'professional' beggars who bum around in the City bring home 180 quid a day (did I remember that figure right?)... anyway, I ended up thinking about it for rather too long and was actually on the cusp of considering giving it a go! Now that is one of my most desperate ideas in these last eight months, though writing about it now I'm getting kind of excited about it again! Yeah I know what you're thinking, this blog is weird.

And so ends the thirty-sixth week of me dossing around doing nothing. I hadn't thought of the time before in terms of weeks, and that really is a disgracefully long time. 40% of that time I've probably been in bed, 50% spent gawping at a computer screen, 9% drinking, and 1% speaking on the phone to truly inept recruitment agents (and that was 1% too much). There is perhaps a page left of the 'Unemployed' chapter in my life. How interesting can I make it?

This week, we shall see.

Yes, more mug punting

A merry Easter to one and all.

Yesterday was good; the drinks in the evening provided some good banter and a fun ride home - it's always interesting when you have to cram four passengers into the back of a small car. In the afternoon I went to Moons with Covey, Loz and the Bot. There is a Coral not too far away from the pub, and given our recent trend for mug punting it was inevitable that we'd end up in there. The fact that a blizzard started whilst we were in there resulted in a prolonged session of blindly backing the favourites in every race. Needless to say, only one of us left there with profit (well done Loz) and that was a miracle in itself.

A couple of 'funnies' from the afternoon...

- In one of the chases, one of the horses went 25 lengths clear after about half a mile. Covey subsequently screwed up the slip for his bet on the favourite and threw it across the table. His horse ended up winning it at the death, prompting a lot of shouting and laughing, even from other people in the shop.

- Botten, after backing Lewis Hamilton: "Lewis Hamilton is 7/1 to win the Grand Prix, that's a dead cert" (or something to that effect). Update: Hamilton came fifth.

- It's impossible to be a true mug without playing on the roulette machines. So we all chipped in and put some cash into one. First bet: red.... result: zero. Second bet: red..... result: black. Third bet: red..... result: black. I'll leave you all to draw your own conclusions from that. (FIIIIIXXXXXXXXXXXED!!!!!)

Away from mug punting.... I'm finding it hard to resist trading on all of the good sport that is on at the moment. But those losses last week really annoyed me, so I'll continue with my break for the time being. Poker is going fine at the moment, so I'm happy to stick with that.

I was talking to the guys yesterday about how you might be able to make a living by laying England at all sports, and I thought I'd give it a paper trial.... so, bet one is laying England in the Third Test against New Zealand. Current price is 1.25 and I'll lay them for me to win one unit.

Ok, Grand Slam Sunday is about to begin. Come on Liverpool and Arsenal!!

More soon, thanks for reading.

Good night after bad start

This will just be a quick update as I want to watch a bit of TV at nine (for once it looks like there is some decent stuff on). Last night was great, even though Jenkins lost his match in the darts and our bet was killed immediately. Looking back on it, it was just inevitable that that would happen, sooooo typical! Nevertheless we'll probably do it again next week, we are mugs and proud!

I was really drunk last night and had a pretty nasty hangover earlier, but I'm all better now. A good sleep tonight and I'll be in good shape for Covey's birthday tomorrow!

I think I know now why no one has been commenting - apparently you needed to sign into Google or something to leave a message. Well I fixed that now (hopefully) so please, leave some feedback! My life has been so empty lately that this is what makes me happy, haha!
Just read that last line again; I sound like a real weirdo. Oh well....

Will do a proper update soon with news on my poker ventures, mug punts, and Covey's birthday drinks!

Thanks for reading.

Should be a good night

I'm really looking forward to tonight. As I explained yesterday, I'm going out with the lads and we're going to be putting on an accumulator on the darts. It looks like we're going to be backing Jenkins, van Barneveld, Manley and Taylor. As long as Jenkins wins the first game (by no means a certainty, he's only an evens shot) then we should have some pretty cracking banter set up! If he loses it's going to suck big-time, because we've hyped tonight up so much and I have to admit I'm pretty damn excited, lol. COME ON JENKINS!

If anyone comments on this post, I'll write a glowing tribute about them in my next entry (even if I don't know you). To leave a comment, just click on the 'comments' link below.

More mug punting, but I like it

I just wrote a massive post and it disappeared (literally). Then I wrote another slightly abbreviated version and it disappeared too. Unbelievable. I'm now in a dreadful mood and this will just have to be even shorter.

Since my break from trading began, I've been engaging in a bit of mug punting and it's actually been good fun! Went to the horrible little Coral in Pinner yesterday with Gareth and Covey and even managed to pick a winner in the dogs at Crayford (it wasn't even the favourite, get in there!)

Tomorrow we're all going to stick a few quid in and put an accumulator on the Premier League Darts games. We'll watch the action and guzzle down a load of premium lager, so if things go our way we'll get the Bank Holiday weekend off to a flyer!

As you may know, I'm a big fan of http://www.kickingbets.blogspot.com/ and today I've followed Chris's tips again.

My selections for the 2008 Sports Personality of the Year now look like this:

Beth Tweddle at 66/1
Zara Philips 50/1
Jessica Ennis 35/1
Kelly Sotherton 25/1

Ok people, time for a bit of poker. I'll also be sweating the Man Utd and Chelsea games which start in a minute.

Thanks for reading!

Last two weeks before work

Thanks to those of you that left comments, either on here or by text. Please keep it up, it's nice to read feedback. Anything will do; it doesn't have to be good... in fact if it is personal or offensive it will most likely be funny and more interesting to read anyway!

So, yesterday it was two weeks before I start work at British Airways. After all that's happened since I left uni, there just had to be another drama before I actually started the job, and indeed there was. Someone from BA rang me up to say they hadn't received my contract (I sent it off about two weeks ago), which meant that today I've had to go and photocopy my copy of it and send it all off once more. Also, they have to re-send me the form to fill out my bank details on, which is just more paperwork and BS to get through. I have a horrible feeling that the bureaucracy is going to let me down and my start date will get put back. That would be really bad news, because I've told my mate from uni that I can go on holiday with him in early June. If my start date was delayed, I wouldn't be able to go on the holiday (I can't take any leave during the first five weeks). We'll just have to wait and see.

So how am I going to spend my last thirteen days of freedom? Probably doing nothing. There should be at least a couple of decent nights out during that period. I received a comment from Barry saying not to give up the gambling - I definitely won't, I'm just going to be holding back on the trading front for a while - and hopefully this Thursday night will be a good laugh; fuelled by a punt on the darts. I had an idea that we all put something like a fiver into a pot, then sit down and decide who we think will win in each fixture in this week's Premier League matches. Then we could stick a large accumulator bet on, which would result in everyone going beserk at a 180 being scored, and so on. In fact, I'll get a message out about that in a minute.

Ok folks, thanks for reading, more soon.

Gambling meltdown

Profit/loss since last update: -£52

Early in 2007 I lost a hundred quid betting in-running on Luton v Birmingham on a Friday night when I was bored. Yesterday I lost thirty quid on Indian Twenty20 cricket. Are there any positives to take from this? Maybe the fact that I'm not leaving myself with three-figure liabilities any more (that's not to say it won't happen again). But apart from that, the conclusion is that I'm a still a gambling degenerate and always will be.

The other £22 loss came from horse recommendations from what I thought were decent sources, a small football accumulator and a bet on Massa to get a podium finish in the Aussie Grand Prix.

I've decided to take action, and I will be taking a break from trading for a while. I'll continue to have small punts on things if I think there is value, but apart from that it will be poker that will feed my addiction. For some reason, I'm much more disciplined with my bankroll-management in poker and it's the only form of gambling that I've achieved steady results in.

Enough on gambling. Last night was great fun. It's incredible the amount of enjoyment that four 22 year-old guys can get from kicking a tennis ball towards a bin, doing keepy-uppies in between and with a few beers on the side. Top evening! (Apart from the fact that Arsenal have now lost the Premiership - FACT)

Now listen up. If anyone is reading this, PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT - I actually don't know if I have a readership any more! If you're worried about leaving your name because you're embarrassed to be reading this, then leave a fake one!

No more posts until someone comments!

I'm a mug punter

Profit/loss since last update: -£19.90

A bad day at the office. I'm so stupid sometimes. At least I've learned a lesson - never follow Alan Marsh's 'tips'. I lost a tenner on his selection at the 2.50 at Cheltenham, which he recommended to have as part of a double with Kauto Star in the Gold Cup (which was well beaten also). Thankfully I passed on the double, but the damage was still done. The horse might have come last for all I know; it certainly wasn't on the screen for any of the final lap.

In a desperate bid to make my money back I layed Kauto Star to place in the next, which was another losing mug bet. I lost a few more quid on some antepost bets I'd had on the top jockey market. All in all, a very poor day. Even worse because I should be saving up for a holiday I've agreed to go on with my mate from uni in early June. Ugh, I'm such an idiot.

I still recommended Denman to my mate Lawrence earlier, so I can be slightly happy about that.

Tomorrow. Arsenal play Middlesbrough at 5.15, so that will be an early start on the drinks front.Speaking of Arsenal - what a lousy Champions League draw. And as for Chelsea, how do they get away with such easy draws, all the time?

I don't deserve to go out tonight, so looks like I'll be staying in watching Sleepless in Seattle with my mum and sister.

Happy days.

Gambling all day

Profit/loss since last update: £1.50

Thought I'd add a new feature and include an update on each post of how my gambling/trading has been going, as I haven't really been doing much else. Today I made a loss of about four quid on the Indian Twenty20 between Lahore and Hyderabad; it was absolutely dominated by Lahore with few fluctuations in the market. I tried a couple of sneaky lays at low prices, but there was absolutely no hint of a comeback by Hyderabad, who were all out for 80-something. However, I made the money back with a small bit of interest with a cheeky in-running punt on Inglis Drever in the World Hurdle.

I just read back my blog entry from yesterday; apologies for the bad, disjointed writing. That will teach me to slack off updating!

Will probably play a bit of poker now, then will probably be out for some drinks later.

My thoughts on 'luck v success' will have to wait, I'm sure you're all wetting yourselves with excitement!

Thanks for reading.

PS. Spurs out of the UEFA Cup ahahahahahahaha!

Tired

It's nearly 1am and I'm just about to go to bed, so this won't be a massive entry.

It's been another hard week doing nothing. I want to update the blog more often, but I think I'd bore everyone to death. Speaking of 'everyone', are people still reading this?! If there's anyone out there, leave a comment! I'll be inspired to update more often if there's someone out there who might be checking lol.

So, what have I been doing? It was my sister's birthday party on Friday which was good (those of my mates who attended got battered, thanks for helping out!) and things have been pretty quiet since then.

I start work for BA in just over a fortnight. I keep hoping there'll be some divine intervention which will mean I won't have to spend the next fifty years working, but it doesn't look like anything's going to happen like that just yet.

Sport-wise... there's been a lot on. The footy season is reaching its climax, and the cricket season is soon going to be started. The ICL has just started, which means there's a Twenty20 on every day to keep me entertained. Actually, earlier today I nearly did my bollocks on Mumbai v Kolkata, but I ended up three pounds to the good, thank God. There's the Second Test between New Zealand and England on at the mo too, in which I've layed the draw for the time being. Vaughan and Cook just fell, so that's looking ok so far.

Been filling in the rest of the time playing poker and strumming the guitar.

I feel another deep and meaningful post coming along very soon, though I'm not sure about what. I read an interesting article on the relationship between 'luck' and success earlier, so perhaps something along those lines.

Ok people, that's all for now.

Virtuoso Arsenal display

After Arsenal's recent slump, they finally gave the performance last night that people had been waiting for. A scintillating display, knocking out the holders and overcoming a seriously biased referee. So yeah, Daz, Gary and I ended up pretty drunk and keeping a couple of American girls company for the rest of the night. Got home the cheapest way possible (haha!) to cap off a great night. I have a minor hangover today, but all is well in the world thanks to Cesc and co.

Today will be wasted by sitting in front of the computer, reading sports and gambling forums, spinning ideas around in my head of how to get rich quick, the usual. This routine has been going on for eight months now, and I'm getting pretty damn good at it. Of course, it is due to stop at the end of this month... but who knows what will happen? There are still a few weeks left for things to change (for the good or the bad, but almost definitely the bad). Will I quit after the first day? Will I even go to the first day? Will I win the lottery before I start? Will I be dead before I start? As you can probably tell, I'm in a strange mood. Probably still a few drops of Bud in my system.

Might play tennis tonight. Tomorrow, I'm guessing there'll be the usual Thursday evening drinks. Can't go too heavy though, as it's my sister's party on Friday. Saturday, might be going out for a 'drink' with my sister, and whoever else.

Right, time for another cappuccino. And by the sounds of things, time for a dump.

Ta-ta for now.

Tuesday 4 March 2008

Come on Arsenal

We're heading into London tonight to watch the second leg of AC Milan v Arsenal. I've found a place that's pretty close to Baker Street station, so if Arsenal lose it will be easy to sulk off and get home quickly. If they win though, there's easy access to everywhere, so we'll see what happens.

Just thought I'd post the bets I have on at the moment...

England to beat New Zealand in the first test (stake refunded if it's a draw)
Sam Thomas to be top jockey at Cheltenham (see http://www.kickingbets.blogspot.com)
My lay of Arsenal to win the Premiership, which is going well :(
Spurs to win the UEFA Cup
Beth Tweddle/Zara Philips for Sports Personality of the Year

At the moment I'm trading Djokovic v Cilic in the Dubai Championships. I layed Joker to start, but he's broken. Let's hope for another upset like yesterday when Murray beat Federer (unfortunately).

Will do a proper update soon. Hopefully Arsenal will win later and I'll write tomorrow with a report of a cracking night!

Ok, that's all for now.
